Introduction
Hey there, I am Marina Ormes, and today I want to talk to you about Evolutionary Astrology.
What is Evolutionary Astrology? What distinguishes it from other types of astrology? Evolutionary Astrology is a branch of modern astrology.
You may have heard of Hellenistic or traditional astrology, and Evolutionary Astrology actually comes out of a more modern version of astrology with psychological approaches that come from the 20th century. So, last century, right? I guess modern, but also historically modern. And Evolutionary Astrology is a way of approaching astrology that looks at a bigger picture of meaning and purpose.
Evolutionary Astrology and Steven Forrest
And my teacher—I studied with Steven Forrest when I learned Evolutionary Astrology. And so first I want to share with you some of his definitions and approaches, which I very much agree and align with, and then I'm going to give you some a little bit of my own flavor and how I think about it and what feels important about Evolutionary Astrology as an approach to me.
First of all, Steven Forrest, one of the founders of Evolutionary Astrology… it depends on what school you follow, but there are different viewpoints and so on and so forth. But Steven Forrest is one of the founders of Evolutionary Astrology, and he talks about it as a map of the soul's evolution.
The chart is a map of the soul's evolution, and we are looking at it as bigger than personality, bigger than even one lifetime. And when we look at the astrology chart, we can especially work with what we see there. My interpretation is that we think of it in service to that bigger picture of the soul's evolution. We think of our natal charts, our astrology charts, and our makeup as helping us to do that soul's evolution.
Steven Forrest says that we work with the astrological forces; we are not simply directed by them. He says we are also working with a core belief that there is a larger transpersonal—or bigger than the individual—meaning to our lives. You could also call that spiritual, and astrology can be used to help us live in harmony with that higher purpose. We can use astrology to live that path of meaning.
Steven Forrest also says, "It is up to you, how you interact with the field of the archetypes and how you create your own answers."
An Aside - What are archetypes?
So What are archetypes? Archetypes are sets of symbols—so they are things that we understand because they are patterns. Like when somebody says a princess, right? We're not talking about a specific princess—we're talking about, well, we might be, but when we're using it as a generic term we are talking about the archetype of princess. Being a princess might mean feeling entitled, it might mean fancy clothes, it might evoke, you know, a certain aspect of femininity. But the point is that it's not one person, it's not one way of being, but it does evoke this set of patterns, the set of associations, that we get a picture in our minds of what a princess is.
Another archetype would be a villain, right? We can get a picture in our minds of what we mean by a villain, and our villains come in different flavors and with different names and all those things, but a villain is an archetype. It's something that we might see and might show up in stories—a field or a realm of something that we can talk about that is a pattern.
Not all Aries sun people are the same, but they have these qualities that we associate with an Aries Sun. And everything in astrology can be boiled down to archetypes and how they interact with one another, right? The archetype of a planet and the archetype of a sign. And obviously that can look different for different people, but it has this pattern or this set of qualities that we associate with it.
And in my mind, in my way of thinking too, that archetype also invites us to really deepen—to look deeper into… where does that really come from? You know, if we think of Aries as the fighter—like, where does that really come from? Is Aries really about having energy and caring about things that need action and acting upon things we care about? You know, it's like looking at those deeper motivations. In my mind, archetypes continually deepen. We can continually look deeper into the well of what the archetype gives us to learn more about it, and they never end; there's always more to learn.
Okay, that was an aside. Coming back to Steven Forrest.

He also says, it's up to you how you interact with that field, which is the archetype, the set of qualities or the pattern of qualities. It's up to you how you interact with that and you create your own answers.
How do you think this turns out? How do you feel about this? What feels right to you? How do you want to interact with or make your own decisions about this archetype?
And finally, he says, an archetypal field is rich with both meaning and also possibility. And I totally, totally agree with that. Each archetype gives us not just an ever-deepening well that we can learn more about, but also this expansive field of possibilities of how that could manifest.
We do not see astrology as deterministic or fatalistic in Evolutionary Astrology, because that would be locking it into one possibility within that realm or that field or that archetype that is part of a pattern but not definitive. Or as—who is it—Richard Tarnas would say, it is not concretely predictive.
In other words, we can't say exactly how this is going to turn out, but we can see the patterns. We can see the qualities that are involved.
Okay, hopefully that wasn't too much on that. Anyway, I think it's fascinating. That was Steven Forrest.
Evolutionary Astrology, Marina Ormes' View
Now I'm going to give you my take, my flavor of how I view Evolutionary Astrology. And I think about Evolutionary Astrology in conjunction with healing, with a healing path.
When we think about healing, you know, obviously there's like—you cut your finger, you wait for it to heal, you know, that's not a big deal to your soul. But there are many things that are a big deal to your soul—you know, trauma is one that comes to mind, but also just things that we want, like, you know, we want to be successful in our career, we want to raise a family, whatever it is, part of our path of healing is to be able to do those things that feel important to us, that we want.
And that's part of our soul's path, it's part of our evolutionary path, and it is part of our path of healing, because as we do our healing work in mind, body, spirit, and emotion—the whole self—as we do that healing work, we move along that evolutionary path that Steven Forrest is talking about.
In my view, Evolutionary Astrology is about healing the whole self, and so it is how we do this healing work, how we take the next steps—our next steps—of what is going to feel true and right to us as individuals.
Yes, there is, you know, things that are right in the world just because they're right, and sometimes we agree on those and sometimes we don't. But there's also what is true and right for you, for the individual. And knowing that, getting in touch with that, is part of our evolutionary path.
It's part of living our path of meaning and purpose, which goes hand in hand with healing the whole self, because we need physical healing, we need mental healing, we need to heal our minds and how we think, we need emotional healing, we need support for our emotional process, we need spiritual healing, and ultimately that speaks to the bigger picture of what gives meaning to our lives.
We need that whole self included when we think about our healing process, and to me, that goes hand in hand with the evolution of the soul—the soul's evolutionary path that Steven Forrest is talking about.
The One Thing My Clients Really Want
There are different techniques one can use in Evolutionary Astrology, and the one that I learned from Steven Forrest that I use in depth with my clients, because it is so powerful—and I learned right off the bat, from the very beginning of learning this technique, I learned that this is the one thing that clients really want—that is, working with the Lunar Nodes.
What the Lunar Nodes do is to help us see how to get from survival mode to moving along our evolutionary path.
The Lunar Nodes show that way forward. They reveal to us what to do, how to think about it, how to show up for ourselves in that healing work so that we can move along that evolutionary path and do that whole-self healing work.
That is the Lunar Nodes. They help us pay attention to our evolutionary medicine, which helps us live according to meaning and purpose, and to fulfill the potential that our birth charts are.
Our natal chart shows each one of us what wholeness looks like for us, how we're made up, how the different archetypes interact with one another, and how we can fulfill the promise or the highest potential for that natal chart, for what is calling us. Because what your natal chart says is calling to you matches what you feel in your gut that is important to you, that you need to do—like, when you touch into those places that are like what you really want, and it feels scary, and it can feel like maybe even like a knot in your gut.
That's the passion of being who you are. That's what it means to live that potential of your natal chart. And even without your natal chart—if you could throw it out the window, it could never exist—this would still exist inside of you. It's just that the chart gives us a map for how to think about ourselves, what our potential is, what is the highest potential for the specific configurations of our own natal chart, and the Lunar Nodes give us the next piece, which is how we do that—not just what, but how.
And that is why it is the one thing that my clients really want.
I would sit down with my clients in the early days, tell them all about their chart, and they would just look at me, and they would say, "That's great. But I already knew that. What do I do about it? What do I do about it?" And so then I was able to bring in the Lunar Nodes and say, "Here is what you do about it. Here is your evolutionary medicine. Here is how you can think about it. Here is how you can support yourself. Here is the energy and the qualities that are going to help you move forward."
It's not going to be comfortable. It's not going to necessarily be easy, because we're talking about your soul's evolution, but it is going to feel meaningful. It is going to feel true and right for you.
That is—and yes, I get passionate about Evolutionary Astrology—but that's what Evolutionary Astrology is.
Next Video - The Lunar Nodes
Stay tuned! In my next video, I'm going to tell you what the Lunar Nodes are and how to find them for yourself if you don't already know what yours are. And then I'm going to do some videos on each Lunar Node pair to help you take a deep dive into what that looks like and means for you, with your Lunar Node pair—your south node, your north node—and finding out what it is is simple—and then we'll take it from there.
I’ll answer the questions: How do you interpret it? How do you bring that into your life? What does it feel like to be this type of person? And what do you do with that? The how—the how on moving forward into your soul's purpose, into that path of healing your whole self, and what that looks like for you.
Watch for my next video on the Lunar Nodes, and then after that, some videos on each Lunar Node pair. Stay tuned.
